Okay, so let’s be real. Writing is awesome. Creating entire worlds, making up characters, and just getting lost in your own imagination? The best. But what happens when no one around you seems to get it?
Maybe your friends think writing is “boring” (what??). Maybe your family nods and says “That’s nice” but never actually asks about your story. Or maybe someone straight-up told you, “Writing isn’t a real career.” (Cue dramatic eye roll.)
It sucks. And it makes you wonder: Why even bother?
But listen. If you love writing, if stories make you happy, if your brain needs to get words on a page—then you have to keep going. Even when no one else gets it.
1. Write for Yourself First
Seriously. Forget about what other people think for a sec. If writing makes you happy, then that’s a good enough reason to keep doing it. You don’t need approval to create something cool.
2. Find Your People
Not everyone is going to care about your writing—but somebody out there will. Look for other young writers online, in writing groups, or even in your school. Talk about your ideas with people who actually want to listen! (Hint: They exist, I promise.)
3. Remember: Every Great Writer Started Somewhere
No one wakes up one day and suddenly writes a bestselling novel. Even famous authors had people doubt them at first. J.K. Rowling? Rejected a bunch of times. Agatha Christie? Took four years to get published. Keep going. Prove them wrong.
4. Don’t Let One Opinion Stop You
If someone says, “Your story isn’t that good,” guess what? That’s just one opinion. Maybe your story isn’t their style. Maybe they’re just in a bad mood. Maybe they wouldn’t recognize a good book if it hit them in the face. Keep writing anyway.
5. Save Your Old Writing (Even the Cringey Stuff)
One day, you’re going to look back and realize how much you’ve improved. That “bad” story you wrote last year? It’s proof that you’re getting better. Every word you write is a step forward.
6. Imagine the Future (Yes, Really)
What if you actually finish that book? What if you publish it? What if, years from now, someone reads your words and feels inspired? That could happen. But only if you keep writing.
So yeah. If no one takes your writing seriously, it’s their loss. You’re a writer. You don’t need their permission. Keep going. Keep creating. And one day? They’ll wish they had supported you from the start.
Now go write something amazing.
