How to Start Writing a Novel as a Teen (Without Losing Your Mind)

So you wanna write a novel? Cool. Amazing. But also… kinda terrifying? Don’t worry, I’ve been there. Staring at a blank page, thinking where do I even START? Trust me, it’s not as scary as it looks. Let’s break it down step by step so you don’t end up crying into your notebook at 2 AM.

Step 1: The Idea (AKA The Lightning Bolt Moment)

You need an idea. Duh. But don’t freak out if you don’t have a perfect one yet. Just start with something that makes you excited. A “what if” question is a great way to start. Like:

  • What if a girl found out her best friend was a ghost?
  • What if the world ran out of books?
  • What if a kid got stuck in their favorite video game?

If your idea makes you wanna write RIGHT NOW, that’s a good sign.

Step 2: Meet Your Characters (Yes, They Need a Personality)

Your main character is the heart of your story. They can’t just be a blob of words on a page. Ask yourself:
✔️ What do they want more than anything?
✔️ What’s stopping them from getting it?
✔️ What makes them interesting (quirks, fears, secret talents)?

Give them a weird habit, a strong opinion, something that makes them feel real.

Step 3: Plot (Aka Don’t Just Wing It… Unless You Want To)

Okay, so how does your story actually go? Some people plan every little detail (plotters), and some just make it up as they go (pantsers). I’m somewhere in between (a plantser?). If you don’t wanna get lost, try this super simple structure:

Beginning: Something happens that changes your character’s life.
Middle: Everything goes wrong. Drama. Chaos. Maybe an explosion.
End: They either win, fail, or learn something huge.

That’s it! You don’t need a 10-page outline—just a rough idea of where you’re going.

Step 4: Just Write (Seriously, Stop Overthinking)

Now comes the fun (and slightly painful) part. WRITE. Even if it’s messy. Even if you hate it. The first draft is supposed to be bad. That’s what editing is for. The trick is to keep going.

Some tips:
✏️ Set small goals—100 words a day is still progress.
✏️ Write like nobody’s watching. This is YOUR story.
✏️ If you get stuck, skip ahead to the fun parts!

Step 5: Celebrate (Because You’re Actually Writing a Novel!)

Most people TALK about writing a book. You? You’re actually doing it. So give yourself credit! Treat yourself to a snack, blast your favorite song, or do a little victory dance.

And remember—your story matters. Even if it’s weird. Even if it’s not perfect. Just keep going. The world needs more stories, and yours could be one of them.

Now go write! ✨✏️
